Here, nothing is under control: After switching to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a former NGO director is confronted with a hostage situation and the realities of politics.
In politics it is usually so: If it would not be so damn sad, one would have to almost laugh about it. "Sous Contrôle", winner of the French series section of this year's Seriesmania in Lille, makes a virtue of this hardship and a real laughing stock out of half a state crisis. At the center of the series is 45-year-old Marie Tessier (Léa Drucker), who moves from an NGO to the head of the French Foreign Ministry just as terrorists take several French and European hostages in the Sahel. She quickly turns the crisis into a very personal affair and crosses numerous red lines in the process. "Under control," as the title (and politics) like to suggest, she has quite little in the process, however, which makes "Sous Contrôle" an enlightening satirical border-crossing in the best "Veep" style.
