Two university freshboys between coming out, coming-of-age and friendship for life: The semi-biographical adaptation of a comedy program by Jack Rooke inspires as a male "Fleabag" variant.
What Dolly Alderton in "Everything I Know bout Love" thinks she knows about love, her male counterpart Jack Rooke also had to learn at the British university. He is the author, narrator and template for the main character in "Big Boys," 19-year-old Jack, who as a college freshman must learn to deal with the death of his father and his own homosexuality. Fortunately, fate throws him together with the older Danny, a classic Lad who hides a vulnerable core under his loud shell. A deep friendship develops between the two, in which the fact that the "gay" friend is, for once, the main character and not a sidekick, is particularly noteworthy. The result is a drama as heartfelt as it is sensitive, replete with clever insights and cultural references. And therefore makes you think of "Fleabag" every now and then, not only because of the breaking of the fourth wall. Not the worst reference...
